My Whisky Adventures

Shortly turning 51 in April I’ve only been drinking whisky for about 11yrs, being that I hail from Scotland this may surprise a few of you. I put this down to the fact that, prior to joining the RAF I started my working life as a waiter in various Grangemouth and Falkirk hotels and this is where I had my first experiences with what I used to call whisky. The traditional wedding tipple on entry to the reception was either Bells, Famous Grouse, Vodka or orange juice and there were always doubtless drams left over after each shift. This being true I was invited to try one and from then on I decided I wasn’t a fan.
But like a good whisky, our taste improves with age and upon turning 40 I was introduced to a local whisky festival by my Brother & Sister in Law who I must say are true advocates of the ‘water of life’. I’ll take this opportunity to plug her twitter feed 1 Woman’s World of Whisky. My wife also blames them for my newfound whisky habit and the associated cost.

I’ll aim to write a few blogs every month although I’m not the best at writing and have a short attention span at times so they will hopefully be brief and explain my thoughts on a particular whisky that has crossed my path each month.
My individual tastes revolve around the sweeter whiskies, the red wine, port, sherry casks etc with a deeper red colour and a smooth yet lingering finish, there are also a good few peated single malts that I like also and will cover them at some point in my writing.
It would be great if you could all join in and post your thoughts as we each have our own tasting preferences and I’d also be keen to hear your thoughts.
Since I was born in Falkirk, I feel it’s only fitting to give a shout out via my cover photo to The Falkirk Distillery, one of the newest in Scotland and having tasted their new make, is bound to be a fantastic addition to the whisky environment when it officially opens to the public later this year. Big shout out to George, Fiona and the team.
Stay tuned for my first review.
